1. Basic Table Setting
Basic table setting is for everyday meals with your family. This setting is hassle-free to create and still has a classic look to it. Here are the tips you need for basic table setting.
- Lay the placemat on the table.
- Put the dinner plate in the middle of the placemat.
- Place the fork on the napkin.
- To the right of the plate, place the knife closest to the plate, blade pointing in.
- Now, place the spoon to the right of the knife.
- Set the water glass, slightly above the plate, in between the plate and utensils. Exactly where 1 pm would rest on a clock face.
2. Casual Table Setting
Casual table setting is for when you have your friends over or just having a relaxed time with your closed ones. It has additional glassware, tableware and flatware. Here are the rules you need to follow for the perfect casual table setting.
- Lay the placemat on the table.
- Put the dinner plate in the middle of the placement.
- Place the salad plate on top of the dinner plate.
- If you are starting with a soup course, place the soup bowl on top of the salad bowl.
- Lay a napkin to the left of the plate.
- To the right of the plate, place the fork on the napkin.
- Directly above the knife, place the water glass.
- To the right slightly above the water glass, place the wine glass or a glass of another beverage.
3. Formal Table Setting
If you’re hosting an elegant dinner party or wedding dinner you might want to know how to set a table for a three course meal. A formal table setting includes elements like – a table cloth, napkins, dessert spoons, water glasses, wine glasses and so on. Read on to know more all the details of a formal table setting.
- Lay an ironed tablecloth on the table.
- Set the charger plate at each seat.
- In the center of the charger plate, place a soup bowl.
- Place the bread to the top left of the charger plate.
- Lay a napkin to the left of the charger plate.
- To the left of the charger, place the salad fork.
- Go ahead and put the forks on the napkin.
- On the right of the charger plate, place the knife.
- Place a butter knife horizontally, blade facing inwards on top of the plate with the handle pointing towards the right.
- Directly above the charger plate, place a dessert spoon (a teaspoon) handle pointing to the right.
- Directly above the knife, place a water glass. To the right of the water glass, place the wine glass.
- If you are using individual salt and pepper shakers for guests, place them above the dessert spoon.
- If using a place card, set it above the dessert spoon.
