On the festival of colours – Holi, add the colours of spring to your dining experience with scrumptious Holi snacks and desserts. Besides smearing each other with bright spring hues, Holi is also the time to indulge in amazing food and sweets. Read on to make these traditional Holi dishes that’ll definitely take you back to your childhood.
1. Gujiya
Sweets are an integral part of Holi and none of the Holi platters are complete without flakey, crispy gujiyas. Read on to make these delicious traditional gujiyas.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1 cup Maida
- ¼ tsp. salt
- ½ cup water
- 2 tbsp. ghee
- 1 cup khoya
- ½ tsp. ghee
- 1/3 cup chopped mixed dry fruits
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- ½ tsp. cardamom powder
Instructions:
- 1. In a mixing bowl, mix – wheat flower, maida and salt
- In a small pan, heat the ghee and pour it over the mixed flours
- Rub the ghee into the flours mixture and form into a bread crumb like texture
- Now, add the water and knead into a dough adding water as required
- Knead the dough, until firm and cover with a moist cloth. Set it aside for 30 minutes
- Now, crumble the khoya or grate it
- In a small pan, heat the ghee and add in the khoya
- Stir continuously on low heat. Cook until the khoya begins to gather around. Keep it aside to cool
- Now, add the powdered sugar and chopped dry fruits to the khoya
- Mix everything well and keep the stuffing aside
- Now for the stuffing, divide the dough into two parts, make a medium log of each part and slice into equal parts
- Now on a rolling board, dust some flour and roll the dough into small balls forming a flat circle
- With your fingertips, apply water over the circumference edge
- Take the khoya filling mixture and fill in the circles forming a half circle
- Now, deep fry the gujiyas in hot oil.
2. Dahi Vada

Ingredients:
- 1 cup urad dal
- 1 green chili
- ½ inch ginger
- 1 tsp. cumin seeds
- 1 pinch. Asafetida
- 3 tbsp. water
- ½ tbsp. raisins
- 8 to 9 cashews
- Salt to taste
- 2 cups curd
- 1 tsp. chaat masala
- ½ tsp. red chili powder
- 1 tsp. roasted cumin powder
- Black salt to taste
Ingredients:
- First pick and rinse the lentils and soak them in the water overnight for 4-5 hours
- Now, drain and add the lentils into a grinder, add – green chilies, ginger, cumin seeds and asafetida, water forming into a smooth batter
- Now, in a kadhai heat oil for deep frying
- Take your batter on your palms and forming a ball
- Release the balls into the kadhai and fry until golden brown
- To assemble the dahi vada, in a bowl place the vada and pour the prepared dahi mixture on top
- Sprinkle with red chili powder and chaat masala.
3. Malpua
Malpuas are a traditional Indian sweet from Rajasthan and Orissa. They are basically pancakes soaked in sugar syrup. Read on to make these crispy, sweet and lip-smacking malpuas.
Ingredients:
- 1 ¼ cup Maida
- ½ tsp. cardamom
- 1 tsp. fennel
- 1 ½ cup milk
- 4 tbsp. ghee for frying
- 3 tbsp. milk powder
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup water as needed
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, pour the milk, add the milk powder and mix well
- Add the flour, fennel and cardamom powder mixing well
- Form the batter into a thick and runny consistency, use milk or water as needed. Let it sit aside
- In a pot, add sugar and water. Let the sugar dissolve on a medium flame
- Allow the sugar syrup to boil until it turns sticky or reaches 1 string consistency
- In another pot, bring some water to boil and turn off the heat
- Now, place the sugar syrup pot on top of the hot water, it helps prevent sugar crystals
- In a frying pan, heat the ghee and fry the malpuas until golden brown
- Remove them from the pan and add directly to the sugar syrup
- Garnish the malpuas with pistachios and serve.
