Its the season for Berries

Get creative with fruit this winter; it’s a healthier way to get a sugar high! And there is nothing like Berries to add bursts of colour and flavour to your plates.

We all know that fruit are good for us. Besides being storehouses of vitamins, minerals and plant phytochemicals berries are rich in fiber and natural sugars. But when there is a nip in the air like we have these days and one longs for warm comforting food, fruit by itself inspires little desire – all that chewing is too much work. But, a dusting of sugar, a hint of spice, a splash of wine can uplift that same berries to a delicious new level!

The easiest, quickest thing you can do with Berries is drizzle caramel sauce or honey over them with a sprinkling of spice. Another easy thing to do is sprinkle it with sugar, and zap it in the oven or microwave. This works especially well with berries. A dusting of cinnamon and a drizzle of wine prior to cooking and you have a party dish! Applying small amounts of heat to fruit caramelizes their natural sugars and adds an intensity of flavour as well as softening them up and making them easy to eat.

Add a sweet accent to warm salads by tossing in some briefly cooked berries, to give a sweet touch to them. Fruit can also make sweet salads to eat as is or accompany spicy dishes, rather like a raita. Slice up a selection of berries dust with powdered sugar and cinnamon and set aside so the sugar draws out the natural juices, stir in some hung yoghurt a spoonful or two of cream and dig in! Bon Appétit!
