3 Fasting Recipes You Can Prepare On Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri is one of the auspicious occasions celebrated in India. It is considered Shivratri – the great night of Lord Shiva, which comes once every month on the 13th night or 14th day of the Hindu Lunar Calendar. It is celebrated to honour Lord shiva by observing fast throughout the day. If you are observing a fast, we have some absolutely delicious fast recipes that you can prepare. You can even prepare these recipes otherwise as they are extremely delicious with minimal flavours. Keep on reading to get fast-ready this Mahashivratri.

  1. Fruit chaat

Ingredients:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add all the chopped fruits
  2. Now, add ¼ tsp pepper, ½ tsp chaat masala, ¼ tsp salt, ¼ tsp cumin powder and 5 leaves of pudina
  3. Give it a nice mix, without mashing the fruits 
  4. Add 1 tsp lemon juice and mix well. adding lemon juice prevents fruits from browning
  5. You can let this rest in the fridge and serve chilled. 

2. Amaranth Poori Aloo

Ingredients:

  1. Start by boiling the potato. Once, boiled remove the skin and allow it to cool
  2. Now, mash the potatoes and add in the Amaranth flour and mix well
  3. Next, add a little water, just about 1/2 to 1 tsp and begin to knead the dough
  4. Again add 1/2 to 1 tsp water and knead so that there is no dryness in the dough
  5. The dough should not be sticky. If the dough feels sticky add some amaranth flour and knead again
  6. Keep the dough aside for 15 minutes and allow it to rest 
  7. On a dusted work surface, make medium-sized pooris, neither thin nor thick and fry them in hot oil
  8. Drain them on paper napkins to remove excess oil
  9. Serve Amaranth poori hot with steamed potato veggie. 

3. Fast friendly potato pattice 

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Boil 350 grams potatoes or 3 large potatoes in a steamer or pressure cooker till they are tender and completely cooked
  2. Now, peel and chop them when still warm or slightly hot. Take the potatoes in a mixing bowl
  3. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher very well. Allow the mashed potatoes to cool
  4. Once the mashed potatoes have come to room temperature, then add 3 tbsp arrowroot flour and salt
  5. Since these patties are made during fasting I have arrowroot flour. You can also add buckwheat flour or water chestnut flour if making for fasting. If making for regular days, then add corn starch, rice flour or bread crumbs
  6. Mix the arrowroot flour and lightly knead the mixture
  7. Cover and keep aside the potato dough and heat a small pan and add 3 tbsp peanuts
  8. Roast the peanuts stirring repeatedly on a low flame till they become crunchy and have a few black spots on them. Remove the peanuts and keep them aside
  9. In the same pan add 3 tbsp cashews and roast the cashews till you see golden spots on them
  10. Keep the cashews also aside. Allow them to cool
  11. In a mortar-pestle, add the peanuts and coarsely crush them. You can also use a grinder to do the same
  12. In the same mortar-pestle, then add the roasted cashews and just crush them lightly. You can also chop the cashews. The cashews should have small bits and pieces
  13. In another mixing bowl, take 1/4 cup tightly packed grated coconut 
  14. Add the peanuts, cashews and rest of the ingredients –  from lime juice, coriander, raisins, green chilli paste and salt as required
  15. Stir the stuffing mixture very well and fill them inside the potato balls 
  16. Deep fry them in hot oil and serve with chilled yoghurt!
